Don’t Be Cheap With Yourself

I recently had an Aha! moment when I realized that, despite how hard I work in my career and business, I was holding myself back because I was being cheap with myself.  (Here’s more on that funny story…)

[ouch!]

It just goes to prove that no one is immune to a little self-sabotage.

The longest relationship in our lives is the one we have with ourselves… and it’s the one we most often neglect.

Most women I work with – no matter what country, what culture or career path they’re in – struggle with self-care.  Most of us have been programmed to take care of everybody and everything else before ourselves to the point that we feel guilty if we even think of making our own care a top priority.  And we certainty don’t want to be labeled as hard-to-please or hi-maintenance!

This needs to stop right here and now!

Whether you’re a mom, a corporate leader, or an independent professional, taking care of yourself is not a luxury; it’s a true necessity!

And it’s not just about you & your well being.

If you’re not fueled up you’ll have little to give to others and what you do offer may be tainted with resentment or negativity (and that’s not the type of energy that breeds success).

So, are you being cheap with yourself?

Here’s some typical behaviors to watch out for:

Quality Time: Are you run ragged volunteering or coaching your child’s soccer team and still not allowing yourself quality time to read that book or attend that yoga class you wanted?

Acts of Service: Are you still doing all of the domestic work?  Imagine having housekeeper, a gardener, a personal chef or someone hired to do the laundry on a regular basis?  How would that uplevel your energy & effectiveness?

Gifts:  Do you always think to buy your partner/ kids/ friends beautiful new things while you’re still wearing the same old ratty underwear or using dried up, expired bits of makeup?

Ladies.  Let’s stop the self-denying ridiculousness!

Truth: If you want to live your best life, your best self needs to show up. Today.

Not tomorrow or in a few years… but right now.

Don’t wait for life to get good before you start to treat yourself good. Be kind to yourself today and life will be good.
