How to get fresh perspective for your career!

There’s nothing like travel to break up old though patterns and inspire new ideas.

Wouldn’t you agree?

This also explains my excitement this week as I’m getting ready to travel to the stylish city of Los Angeles, California!

Why do you-go away?

In case you missed the news, a few months ago I shared that I’d signed on to be part of an international, year-long coaching program with my own high-level coach.  As part of that commitment, I’ll be traveling to traveling to Los Angeles, Florence, Paris & Miami in 2016!

While I’ve been busy making preparations for this first trip, and being away from my family and the office, I’ve also been doing some thinking about how travel has a way of expanding our perspective.

It forces us outside of our day-to-day routine (some might call it “the bubble”) as we experience new sights, people, food and culture.  And one of the things I love most about travel (besides the promise of warmer weather and new shopping!) is that it changes how we see ourselves.

When we return home, we gain the unique ability to see our lives, work and our own possibilities in sharper focus.  Previous obstacles might now seem trivial.  Past desires might now seem more realistic than ever.

But international travel isn’t the only way to gain fresh perspective!

Sometimes all you need is a simple change of scenery.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • If you normally work from a home office, borrow inspiration from your favourite coffee shop or a luxurious hotel lobby for the afternoon.
  • Work in a cubicle jungle? Arrange to work from your home or the company conference room for a few days.
  • Feeling isolated in your private office? Invite members of your team to take a walk with you in the park, zoo or a local art gallery to spark new ideas.

You’d be amazed at how a simple shift in your surroundings can make a big difference to your creativity and energy.

So as I sign off to finish packing, I hope you’ll plan some travel for yourself this week – whether you head across the country or just across the street.
