What’s the Greatest Gift You’ll Ever Give?

the greatest gift you'll ever giveI don’t mean to freak you out… but there’s only 4 weeks left until Christmas Day.

What does this mean?

It means, pretty lady, that you’re about to shift into Christmas hyper-drive!  That state of being among North American women where we sacrifice our own sanity in hopes of outdoing last year’s festive efforts.  Proving, once and for all, our female excellence by ‘displaying the latest and hosting the greatest.’

Or not.

As you prepare to spend time with friends and loved ones this festive season, I hope you’ll hold this mantra in mind:

Before being present to others, you must first be present to yourself.

As my Sangha* group leader advises, lavishing love and attention on others is depleting if you’ve not, first, given love and attention to yourself.  If you’re run down, the energy you give to others will be shallow and needy.  But if your own well is deep and clear, the water you draw for others will truly nourish.  (*You can find your own Sangha or meditation group here.)

  • What is life like for you when you’re depleted and stressed?
  • Who suffers because of this?
  • How would life be different if your needs were fully and consistently met?
  • Who would benefit?

As you head into the hectic holiday season, I invite you to put yourself first.

(trust me, it’s okay)

Start by identifying what’s really draining you and then take steps to stop the leaks.

  • Resentful that your career is stuck in idle?  Commit to your Career Makeover in 2015!
  • Carrying a crapload of guilt for neglecting your family?  Plan some time off work & actually take it!
  • Exhausted by clients that demand too much of your time?  Transfer the neediest ones to a junior advisor & pledge to be more selective.

Whatever you do this holiday, start by being present to yourself.  It’s the greatest gift you’ll ever give.

    Very timely advice Heather. 🙂

    • Thanks Kim! It’s so easy to get swept up in the “do more” mentality of Christmas. (Guilty!) Wishing YOU the gift of presence this holiday.
